About Dr Ajesh Maharaj - Rheumatologist
Dr Maharaj is currently Head of Department and Principal Specialist, Department of Internal Medicine, Prince Mshiyeni Memorial Hospital, Umlazi.
He is also on the following International societies:
- International Society of Rheumatologists for drawing up global guidelines and recommendations for the treatment of Polymyalgia Rheumatica. The only South African Rheumatologist on this panel.
- Member of GRAPPA- a global organization for research in Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis
Dr Ajesh Maharaj joined the ANC in 1976 and became actively involved in politics in 1978 where upon he left the country to be actively involved in the activities of the African National Congress.
In 1980 Dr Maharaj was awarded the United Nations Scholarship (UNESCO) to study medicine. The country of choice was India.
He completed medical studies in 1986. In 1987 he returned to South Africa and worked in rural Transkei.
After the un banning of the ANC in 1990, he returned to South Africa and commenced studies in Internal medicine. Dr Maharaj successfully completed the Higher Diploma in Internal Medicine, The Fellowship of the College of Physicians of South Africa and the Certificate in Rheumatology of the College of Physicians of South Africa.
Dr Maharaj is a recipient of the YK Seedat Gold Medal from the College of Physicians of South Africa, for outstanding performance.
In 2002 he was awarded the Travelling Scholarship in Rheumatology.
Membership of Professional Bodies
Dr Maharaj is an Ex-president of the Kwa-Zulu Natal branch of the Arthritis Foundation and on the Advisory Boards of Pfizer and MSD in their Cox II division also on the Advisory Boards of, Roche and Pfizer in their biologics division as well as on the advisory board of AstraZeneca, South Africa.
Dr Maharaj attended numerous meetings overseas including EULAR for the past 10 years. The post graduate course held under the auspices of EULAR in 2001. He also attended the International Lupus meeting in New York in 2004 and the American College of Rheumatology meetings for the last 3 years.
Dr Maharaj is currently doing his doctoral research (PhD) in Psoriatic Arthritis through the Academic Medical Centre, University of Amsterdam,Amsterdam, Netherlands.
